The new Colombian Digital Nomad Visa
The Colombian Foreign Ministry announced the creation of a new Colombian Digital Nomad Visa that it hopes to put into effect in 90 days. This new visa was part of a wide-sweeping reform of Colombian Visa regulations on July 22, 2022. Below you can find answers to some questions you may have about this long-anticipated visa:
1) When will the Colombian Digital Nomad Visa go into effect?
If all goes according to plan, 90 days from when the new visa regulations were created on July 22, 2022.
2) Is there a possibility that it will not go into effect or be delayed?
The Digital Nomad Visa (and the rest of the new visa regulations) could be stopped or delayed by the new incoming President Gustavo Petro or by the Colombian Constitutional Court (if it violates a fundamental right), though there is no reason to believe it will at this time.
3) What are the requirements of the new Digital Nomad Visa?
To qualify for the visa, the applicant must prove or provide:
Proof of monthly income equal to 3 Colombian minimum wages - currently 3M COP - (salarios minimos)
Letter(s) from employer, company(ies) you freelance for, or letter explaining your ownership in a company, if self-employed, in English or Spanish
Comprehensive insurance
4) How long will the Digital Nomad Visa last?
The Digital Nomad Visa will have a duration of up to two years.
5) Can I work for or freelance for a Colombian company on the Digital Nomad Visa?
No. The new Digital Nomad visa regulations specifically exclude work with a Colombian company. Working for a Colombian company requires a Work Visa (M classification).
6) Does the Digital Nomad Visa count toward accumulated time toward a Colombian Residency Visa?
No. It is classified under the V (Visitor) visa category so it does not accumulate time as an M (Migrant) visa would.
7) Can I apply right now?
No. The Colombian immigration authorities use the 90-day window we are currently in to train personnel, update the cancillería website, and make sure the regulations are not challenged in court. Only after 90 days from July 22, 2022, will they accept applications for the new Colombian Digital Nomad visa.
